If you’ve been following the news from Google today, you probably know that you can now stream Spotify right to your Chromecast. To do this, all you need is the Spotify app and a Chromecast or Chromecast Audio device hooked up to your TV or speakers.
Although both types of devices allow streaming, there is one important difference: You’ll need to be a premium subscriber to play music through your Chromecast Audio.
Step 1: Install the Necessary Apps. In order for this to work properly, you will need two applications on your Mac. The first is called Soundflower, which you won't have to interact with but is needed to allow 'redirection of the system audio output as a system audio input.' Download the.zip file below, open the.dmg file, then install the.pkg file. Spotify for Mac has gained the ability to stream music to Google’s Chromecast devices. If you own a Chromecast streamer and media player from Google, you can beam music from Spotify wirelessly to your TV or home Wi-Fi via a Chromecast accessory by clicking the Devices Available button in the top-right corner, then select a Chromecast device.
Here’s how you can get Spotify to stream on your new Chromecast and Chromecast Audio:
- Make sure that your phone, tablet, or computer is connected to the same Wi-Fi as your device
- Within Spotify, select a track that you want to listen to
- At the bottom of the screen, select “Devices Available”
- Tap on the Chromecast device listed
- Now you’re listening to the track right from your TV or speaker
Anyone who has the Spotify app and is connected to your Wi-Fi is able to control what’s played on your television, just like when streaming to other devices, like a Sonos.
Keep in mind that only the new Chromecast devices will be able to do this; if you have one of the first-generation dongles, you’ll have to wait at least a few weeks until it receives a firmware update.

Spotify Mac App Chromecast Download
- First, make sure your Chromecast and the computer running Spotify are on the same network. In Spotify, click the Devices Available button in the bottom-right corner of the window, right next to the Volume button.
- Select your Chromecast from the list of devices. That’s it! If your Chromecast device isn’t listed, continue with step #3 below.
- Even with your Chromecast on, and working with other Apps, for some reason it isn’t always picked up by the Windows and macOS versions of Spotify.
- The most surefire way to get Spotify to ‘find’ your Chromecast is to grab your smartphone or tablet and briefly use it to connect to Chromecast. Open Spotify on your phone/tablet then locate and click the Devices Available link.
- Select Chromecast from the list.
- Now back on your computer, Spotify should find and recognize your Chromecast. You can resume control of Spotify here (and close Spotify on your phone/tablet).
